The Pyramids of Giza are one of the most iconic historical landmarks in the world and a major tourist attraction in Egypt.

However, in recent years, this ancient site has experienced a significant transformation, moving beyond being just a tourist destination to becoming a cultural and entertainment hub hosting international events and festivals.

This shift opens new opportunities for boosting Egypt’s economy by leveraging the Pyramids in an innovative way.

Hosting international concerts in front of the Pyramids places Egypt back at the forefront of the global entertainment scene, showcasing its unique ability to blend history, art, and technology into one unforgettable experience.

“Cultural events create a type of quality tourism that is not solely dependent on one-day visits. Hosting international concerts, light shows, and cultural festivals encourages tourists to spend more time in the area and repeat their visits, Tourism Expert, Executive Member and Egypt Director of Tourism at AKTG, Medhat Mourad said in an interview with Business Today Egypt.”

Mourad added take this also alleviates pressure on the archaeological site as it spreads visitor activity across different times rather than concentrating it at specific hours and in a traditional way. He added that the combination of culture and heritage creates a more balanced and sustainable model.

The Giza Pyramids area has witnessed a radical transformation after the implementation of an integrated development plan for its services by Orascom Pyramids Entertainment Projects, within the framework of Egypt’s vision to raise the level of tourism services and provide a distinguished global experience for visitors from all over the world.

In 2018, the Egyptian government signed a public-private partnership agreement with Orascom Pyramids Entertainment, a company owned by Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, to develop the Giza Plateau, located west of Cairo and home to the ancient historical landmarks. The project’s investment is valued at $30 million.

The shift from tourist attraction to event hub

In recent years, Egypt has made a strategic move to transform the Pyramids from being merely a tourist site into a world-class venue for large-scale international events.

The country has hosted music festivals, cultural performances, conferences, and even large-scale concerts at the Pyramids.

This transformation is designed to attract a new demographic of tourists, especially younger audiences and families, who seek a travel experience that combines history with modern entertainment.

In October, The Giza Pyramids area hosted an extraordinary artistic event that blended the essence of history with the magic of modern technology.

The Pyramids were the backdrop for a global concert by Italian-American artist Matteo Milleri, known as Anima, one of the top stars in the world of techno music.

The event attracted over 10,000 foreign tourists, with total spending exceeding $20 million on accommodation and purchases.

Additionally, more than 3,000 young Egyptians were employed in organizing, production, and preparation, representing both direct and indirect economic benefits for the tourism sector.

In November, Pyramids Echo Festival kicked off at the Pyramids, in which Egyptian, Arab and international artists participated, is an attempt by Egypt to promote the Pyramids as a site for culture and arts and not just as a historical attraction.

In October 2026, Grammy House Giza will be held, spanning several days at the foot of the Pyramids. This prestigious event is set to establish itself as one of the world’s premier music festivals.

The festival will showcase an impressive lineup of artists, producers, and creative talents from around the world, with the list of participants set to be revealed soon.

In addition to live performances, the event will feature cultural exchanges and programs designed to inspire and foster creativity.

Economic Impacts of Hosting Events at the Pyramids

Hosting events and festivals at the Pyramids generates direct revenue from ticket sales, merchandise, and services provided during the events.

In addition, these events provide indirect revenue through increased spending on accommodation, transportation, and food in the surrounding areas of the Pyramids.

This influx of spending benefits not just the tourism sector but also various other sectors tied to the events.

Egypt’s tourism sector topped African countries in tourism revenue, with total revenues standing at $14B, according to data from the World Tourism Organization.

The World Tourism Organization also indicated that Egypt ranked third among Arab countries for the highest number of tourist arrivals, welcoming approximately 14.9 million tourists.

Recently in December, Fitch expects the number of inbound tourists to Egypt to rise to 18.6 million in 2026, reflecting 4.6% year-on-year growth, with continued expansion through 2029 at an average annual growth rate of 5.8%, reaching 20.8 million tourists.

Mourad confirmed that this transformation creates an entire industry, not just a seasonal tourism activity. We can see:

• An increase in hotel, restaurant, and hospitality-related services.

• Attraction of new investments in infrastructure, transportation, and event management.

• Increased average spending per tourist, as attending global events prompts visitors to spend more than traditional tourists.

• Creation of direct and indirect job opportunities in content production, lighting, sound, event management, and marketing.

• In the long term, this turns the area into a semi-permanent cultural and economic hub, not just a two-hour visit.

Job Creation

These events also play a crucial role in creating jobs in various fields, including event management, tourism administration, logistics, and even creative industries.

This provides a boost to the local workforce and helps develop new skills within the tourism sector. Additionally, the temporary and permanent job opportunities arising from these events support economic development in the local communities around Giza and Cairo.

Attracting Tourism Investments

By hosting international events at the Pyramids, Egypt can attract both foreign and domestic investments in the tourism sector.

These events can encourage investments in luxury hotels, resorts, and new tourism facilities in the surrounding areas of Giza and Cairo. Such investments will improve Egypt’s tourism infrastructure, reinforcing its position as a global tourism destination.

Every global event held in front of the Pyramids serves as a larger promotional tool for Egypt than any marketing campaign, Mourad said.

He added that when international artists, global companies, and major producers choose the Pyramids as the stage for their work, it presents Egypt as a safe, modern country capable of organizing events of the highest level.

This effect is immediately reflected in the country’s image in global media and on social media platforms, opening the door for new partnerships and events, he confirmed.
